Does anyone know if its okay to take vitamin D supplements with MTX and Plaquenil. I keep getting nasty chest infections and then when I go on antibiotics I have to come off the RA meds. Its a vicious circle and my dentist says that vitamin D is good at protecting against colds etc.

Hi Val,
I am on Methotrexate and Palquanil and folic acid, I take Redoxon All day defence regular throughout the winter and the beginning of the year. My pharmacist says its ok with the meds. I don't get many cold now etc. They are 8 hour slow release, I think they help. Why do you have to stop your meds when on antibiotics, I have never had to. Hope this is a help to you. Lorna x

I take MTX, Plaquenil, Indometacin, Folic Acid, Ferrous Sulphate, Alendronic Acid & Calcichew & Vit D. I was advised not to take Calcichew the same day as Alendronic Acid and not to take Ferrous Sulphate at the same time as Calcichew. Carol

My consultant rheumy gave me the web address for a company that makes VitD.
One a day with everything else is hardly noticeable...

Hi Sheila Do check with the rheumatologist before adding in supplements even though they seem fairly innocuous. Certain ones can affect the uptake of methotrexate or have an effect on liver function. Normally if blood levels suggest 'extras' are actually needed, ie AdCal, iron or whatever, they will be prescribed for you. Lyn x

I have just been prescribed 20,000 units of Vit D which I have taken along with my mtx. I do have vit D deficiency, though. I'm still here and haven't suffered any probs, so I should think it's OK. However, always check with your rheummy team or GP first.

Does anyone think Vitamin D deficiency could be a cause of RA in the first place..? When I was diagnosed it was co-incidence that my Vitamin D was very low. I got given once a month 50,000 unit tablet to take for 6 months.
Also some months before this I was told Vitamin B12 deficient.
So I keep wondering if these can bring on the RA..?

I think most people who live in UK and work indoors are vit D deficient on the 'official' scale? I live in Hackney and my doc said that although I was Vit D deficient, I was miles better than most in the borough esp since I'm pale skinned. She said that best was to roll up sleeves and walk outside for 15 mins a day - relaxing and enough to boost Vit D to normal. Vit D affects bones, and RA is immune system so tho' having low Vit D creates its own problems and can make you most susceptible to bone damage I wouldn't see that it could actually cause RA. P
